Performing Practice:
Stages of Staging Our Selves
2016
This work exposes gradations of authenticity and artifice, directorial vision and ensemble collaboration, mingling and overlapping to form a work. In part, a choreographic “How It’s Made,” this work also wonders if it’s fun to confuse the blood and the ketchup, the real and the staged, or the planned and the spontaneous. In playing these scales, what’s revealed is an interaction of mindful decision-making between the choreographer and the performer, highlighting the combined physical and intellectual demands of creating choreography. This work also wonders if we can reveal the mechanics of staging our selves, and somehow enhance the mystery and enjoyment of a dance experience.
